Preferred nptech instant messaging protocol?

by Pearlbear on November 20, 2006

I have, for a while, maintained accounts on just about all of the IM protocols out there (AIM, ICQ, Jabber/GTalk, MSN, Yahoo) mostly because there are some people that I know who are on one of the less used ones (like Yahoo or MSN). And most of my work colleagues use AIM or ICQ, if they are on IM. Lately, however, I’ve been noticing that a lot of nptech folks use skype possibly exclusively. I like Skype, and certainly the ability to actually talk with people is really useful (I have both SkypeOut and SkypeIn as well.)

So, is this a trend? What are people’s opinions on using Skype vs. other IMs? Do you mostly use Skype to IM or actually talk? Inquiring minds want to know.

There’s only meebo. Skype is alright but useless when you’re on a computer where you don’t have software install rights. That’s http://www.meebo.com. Skype itself is not so great until you add the social networking layer. Yum yum!

Hmm .. I’m rarely traveling around in Internet cafes these days. I’m mostly on my laptop or my desktop. I use SKYPE alot because most of my clients and profesional network are on it – and easy to share info that way – versus clutter up email. Also, a lot of asian and aussie folks I work with too.

I still use the others though because there are people who still use it.

I’ve found myself using IM versus short chat like emails these days.

I find myself on Skype and Google Talk mostly. I think it’s because they integrate into my daily work flow and I don’t have to remember to open anything.

A while ago, I tried to rally around the idea of an nptech IRC channel for a group chat but it never got steam.

Hmmm, I love IRC. One could just start it, and see what happened. Sometimes these things take time to grow.

Well, I’m certainly up for remembering to log on:
